Cavern (Video Game)

I made the short trailer and the game site was designed by my partner. It's promotional and provides information about the project.

It was a 5 week project, and made possible by spending days on Skype, and spamming e-mails back and forth. He did the coding, and I art directed, developed concept art and created the visual assets. I tried to do a bit of the coding and he tried to do a bit of the art. It was great to experience the processes in developing a game, the interaction between artist and programmer, and tackling design limitations due to time and software constraints.

Objects

First image is a custom controller that I made for a two player game called Cavern. I'll release a trailer and concept art for it in the next post.

Second photo is a product I made for the Art Market last year. It's a neat experience making the something you designed, it's like concept art forealz.

Portfolio Site In progress

Lately I've been posting a lot of in-progress's...

Here's my site that I'm developing. It's built to hold my "intro to web design" assignments, but for the final, it's going to hold real work and serve as my own portfolio site.

Not all the links work, because we haven't gotten far in the semester.

Env thesis sketch

My teacher is late, so did this while we're waiting. 30min sketch for a possible environment look for sidescroll platform.

And, just another mock up, trying to learn if I can draw a collidable map in photoshop, because right now it's looking like I have to use this confusing tile map system. I don't want to do that for a couple reasons, the biggest being restricting the style to that of an old 8-bit game, which I don't want.

EDIT:
OK, through days of research and asking questions on the forum. I managed to get this http://megaswf.com/serve/2109101 Click in screen, then use left/right arrows to move when you land. It's a little buggy. I'm so exhausted doing programming. It's necessary though because it tells me how to make the visual assets. (It would suck to spend 8 weeks making visual assets and then find out I can't use them because of flixel's or my technical limits.)

Thesis Part Dos

I can't embed a flash without paying for the monthly fee so here's a direct link to the hosting site in the mean time. This is the new direction I'm going with for my thesis. I've been teaching myself a little AS3 programming and using the Flixel library to be able to start this project.

Click the screen to start. Move using arrows.

This is just a test---not a part of the game---of how I can treat the environment. I just took apart an earlier piece and created kind of like a matte background set up.

I was inspired by Limbo. It's out on Steam and iTunes for download. Here's some info on it, Limbo.

Tablet class

This one was a good exercise because we're only allowed to use two colors. We had to mix those two to get the rest of the values, hue, etc.

Advice my teacher gave me, it seems like all my marks are going 40mph, I need some that are going 5mph. I never thought about it that way.

Scratched Drafting Table Plans

So I really wanted to build a drafting table over winter break, but I found myself investing too much time planning one. It was a naive dream, and for maybe some other time. I designed a cool "infinity-light" tabletop feature, which was all theory and not actually tested haha.

It has a glass table top with infinity light feature, plus the whole surface can be made into a lightbox. The angled top is adjustable. Dimensions are 28"x40" and 30" for height.

"Techniques for Illustrators" work

I learned so much from painting in oils everyweek, mostly about color and opacity. We started with observation exercises, then went into more illustrative work. Oh! also I realized how valuable good references are, and not to slack when preparing it. I mean, that's something I learned as a result of the entire semester, not just from this class.

Here's some.

Magazine ref.
Wyeth study.
Plein air at a small park.
Concept interior.
Editorial on teaching environmentalism to children.

Ship in Sketchup

I've been playing around with google sketchup. I should have done this before any of my illustrations. It would have helped me greatly and saved time, well I learned my lesson.
