"Techniques for Illustrators" work

I learned so much from painting in oils everyweek, mostly about color and opacity. We started with observation exercises, then went into more illustrative work. Oh! also I realized how valuable good references are, and not to slack when preparing it. I mean, that's something I learned as a result of the entire semester, not just from this class.

Here's some.

Magazine ref.
Wyeth study.
Plein air at a small park.
Concept interior.
Editorial on teaching environmentalism to children.

Ship in Sketchup

I've been playing around with google sketchup. I should have done this before any of my illustrations. It would have helped me greatly and saved time, well I learned my lesson.

Control Tower

This is where the four mystical beings control the ship. A star map appears in the middle as a hologram over the water.
EDIT: Just got an idea about figures dancing, like in 300 with the prophet, to control the hologram and the ship. They appear out of the columns, basically ship AI.

Spaceship Deck

The ship is actually more like a boat, the image shows it when it has landed on water and thats why the horizon appears as if you were ground level. Later, i'll update on development of the ship concept.

Drawing from Tablet - In class

I think I'm getting faster at observing values, and painting. First image is 1min gesture drawings to loosen up, then longer 20 min drawings, last one is 40 min. I realize I left out the face in all of them, thats weird...

Landscape for thesis - City of Shaerbarah

I changed the composition a bit, and I changed the atmosphere a lot. I like it better this way. They're almost two entirely different pieces.

It's just a bw sketch, I'll color it tomorrow, got to go sleep since class is 8:30 in the morning and my drive almost an hour.

1 minute Gestures

Longer stills 30-40min

Tablet stuff

Learning how to get used to blending. It's funny because I'm doing an oil painting at the same time while I was working on this so I'm gaining painting experience double time. It's my dad on his iPod touch, he's always on it every night.

Self portrait

This is a simple self-portrait assignment for my Drawing from Tablet class. We're starting out with only using circle solid brushes with pressure sensitivity.

Words On Wheels

I made so many versions of this piece, I ended up submitting this one. It's actually very different from my initial sketch. There's empty space on the left for text.

Concept Art

I've taken two concept art classes at MICA, Concept Art with Aaron Yamada, and Adv. Concept Art with Sean Murray. I really enjoyed finding shapes and forms in the design process, and also developing concepts as a part of world-building.

I also looked at Dermot Power's work during the latter of the two classes, that's why I began using opaque brushes. Before I had a problem with my edges looking digitally murky, so I tried being more confident with my strokes. I still need to focus on details and what the surfaces are made of.

The rest are work done in Aaron's class. The work below uses transparent brushes in the beginning process. I think I'm getting closer to getting a balance of both methods. I also need to work on colors, because they seem washed out.

Exploring Media

I made title screens for an old tv show I used to watch, Dexter's Laboratory on Cartoon Network.

Christmas card design, it was actually our final during Fall semester.

Illustration for an album review at the Rolling Stones website for the Black Eyed Peas. I originally planned on doing this on a 3d program, but I don't have one so I painted it on photoshop. Fergie is the one with the body, because she's known for her body. I gave each member their own mark of identity.

We re-did a video game cover of our choosing. I chose Halo: Combat Evolved, favorite past time. I always thought the cover should have been more serious to reflect on the suspenseful plot.
We had to include a broom, dog, and radio antenna in the piece.
I learned a cool digital technique, combining 3D text from illustrator with photoshop.

My favorite illustrations because it was fun working with simple tools.

Used neocrayon and scratching techniques on transparency paper, then colored it on photoshop.
