Modeling

I've been studying how to use Solidworks and I'm modeling an iPhone 5. I don't have one so I'm referencing photos off the Internet and a schematics drawing I found with its exact dimensions. It's kind of tangent, but this makes me realize more how much important detail is when you're drawing for  development, whether you're an architect, engineer, artist... And detailing comes from knowing what you're drawing, and I don't usually get that specific that's why I have problems with detail. But that's getting off topic, I'll post my finished model in a later post, still playing with rendering to get the nicest view. I did want to share the speaker mesh I made using a sinusoidal driven curve that I patterned. Apparently, this is the part that covers the iPhone 5 speaker hole (the part you hold up to your ear). I'm trying to reverse engineer the iPhone lol, and it's really made me appreciate its design like the subtle fillet and chamfers around certain edges.

"5th Element" Screenshot Paint

One of my favorite movies, I remember watching it as a kid and it really blew my mind. The futuristic dystopia environment, and the characters especially the alien lady singer who sang alien opera. I've always liked themes where humanity is just another member in a space age league of aliens, like when the main female character was learning about humans by watching a video about humans hehe.

This is about 1.5hrs. I paid attention to simplifying what I see a.k.a. take my glasses off. I have a problem of being overwhelmed with what I observe, like I see too much, which is probably a common problem. My planes are still off, but it's an improvement.

Desolate cabin

I like it visually, but I was trying to add a story and I wasn't seeing one at the time I was painting it. It's just a moonlit cabin at night. Although now, it does kind of remind me of like cabin you'd find in the game skyrim, where you'd find a valuable book or weapon.

Pirate City

1hr b&w playing around, it's been a while, sorry. I'm a bit rusty but refreshed at the same time. I thought the city would be made of left-over sails, masts, and ropes from the poor plundered victim ships.

"Who is this Baby Ruth?"

I visited a thrift store and found a couple old Time and Life magazine specials that had really nice photos in it. This one's a photo of a small boy standing next to Babe Ruth who's much larger than him. 30min

New website

My new portfolio website is live!

It works on your smartphone and tablet too!

In the process, I learned about responsive design, scripting in javascript and jQuery, and also the challenge of designing for cross-browser compatibility.

Here are the original comps.

Longbow Archer concept

I did some archer silhouettes on my iPad awhile back and I thought of an archer that specializes in shooting long distances. The archer has a massive mounted bow and spiral-carved arrows that help stabilize its flight over tremendous distances. She has a viewing hole eye piece that helps her aim.

10 Minutes Go!

Quick studies like these force me to address the important shapes and values first. I learned that I don't do that well enough, so I'll do these more.

League of Legends - Lux

She's the most fun to play in my opinion and I play her pretty much exclusively now. I'm trying to slow down and bring more of a finish to my work. It's also brought into light (haha, light get it?) how I can improve space and form in painting, because I'm slowing down to think about every plane and it's place in space.

Figurative Sculpture

I never expected I would enjoy working with form so much. My instructor was Robert Copskey. Now it makes me curious about 3d modeling lol.
